Attention Management

Lately, I've been listening to Youtuber Aileen Xu aka "Lavendaire" and I've been learning about this idea that time management isn't the same as attention management. In contrast, it describes how properly we spend our time. The things we place our attention can dictates how we will manage our time.

A large majority of people own smart phones. An interesting feature now added to iOS devices is called "Screen Time" which lets you see how long you've been staring at your phone screen and what activities you've been engaging on in your apps such as productivity, social media, etc. When you look at these number it can easily strike a lot of fear because you wouldn't believe how much hours you actually could spend on your phone. Besides time, these hours describes our level of attention. Similar to easily switching between apps our attention level can receive a huge spike based on the information given but if we are given too much information thats not interesting it's so easy now to switch between apps. In the realm of productivity, it's important to realize that our attention defines the person we become, where we spend the most amount of our time translates into the person we slowly become. If you spend a majority of your time shopping or watching TV, your attention is like a consumer. However, if you are someone who wants to be more productive its important to analyze the various places your attention is going and optimize it to slowly make progress towards your goals. If your attention has been going to friends who are bad influences or videos that encourage bad habits then if you don't modulate those small areas stealing your attention they eventually can have influence on your life.

The Trick
I recently saw a tweet by Ali Abdaal on Twitter on how he completely cleared his iPhone pages of apps and only placed important ones out. This immediately blew my mind because the places you would place your attention the moment you turned on your phone can also be edited to maximize your productivity level. Heres the trick now, if you can write down the daily things you do in your life try and find things you do that you don't see benefitting you in any form. An example would be spending too much time on your phone and social media when you know on the inside you would rather be working on a school project due soon or create that video or meet with those friends. If our attention can define us and our time be used up easily, why would you not try to make sure you're doing the things you want to everyday!

Limitations
Of course, no plan is completely perfect people and ideas can spontaneously insert their agendas onto us so its important to be adaptable to your circumstances. In the end, it's important that your attention to what is important in your life based on your priorities is still constantly set on the top so that you are leading the life you've always wanted.

Keep searching for solutions. Your attention is limited just like attending a lecture in university but if you can solve how to maintain it and even conserve energy you have stumbled upon gold and can probably increase your workflow for more success. I hope you found something helpful here.
