Fixing Your Work System⚙️
Have you ever reached a point in the year where the amount of work feels too big to handle and your motivation and free time feels like ideas that existed in a far off dream? I definitely have especially in graduate school.
As someone who is very involved in school, I must admit that everything truly does come with some sort of cost and you can't always have the best of both worlds. I'll share with you some tips on how I learned to fight these weaknesses in my work and productivity systems.
1. Buy More Time: this actually makes a lot more sense than you think because if you set time out for work and reach a state of true discipline, you save your future self some time and worry which is honestly one of the best feelings there is. Just remember not to burn out as you grind through those focused pomodoro sessions.
2. Stop what you're doing and walk: as humans we weren't meant to sit too long. It's important to remember to stand up and walk for at least 5 minutes to clear your head and return to your work/stresses with a more refreshed mind and hopefully a more positive outlook with your current situation.
3. Look at old photos: I find it really energizing when I scroll through some old photos on my phone and find moments when I was smiling and happy with a group of my friends or colleagues. One thing we will never get back is our time, and the ability to look back and get a quick snapshot of a happy moment instead of all the struggles and difficult moments that could have happened leading up to that picture is truly valuable. It's a reminder that hard times won't always be forever and the people who were a part of your life can be much more precious than the worries you had in the past. The fact that you were present in those moments is another reminder that you should be more present on the life you're living right now. A happy working system is a strong system.
4. Say No: The more times we say no to things that steal our time, the more time we open up for ourselves and our happiness. Saying no also correlates with step 1 which is buying yourself more time. The more time you get back the more focus you can put into your work and accomplish more. Of course, saying no all the time closes doors but remember that when one door closes more will open for yourself leading to more of your success in the long run. Don't be afraid to prioritize yourself, it will optimize your system in the long run.
5. Journal: Finding it difficult to know whats truly important to work on, start journaling your thoughts and you'll be amazed of what conclusions you may discover. It can sometimes be difficult to find clarity with busy work schedules and deadlines coming up quick so getting at least your current worries off your mind and onto a piece of paper or electronic device can definitely make room for clarity and success.
I hope you found something helpful here and you get your systems ready to get through another challenging year full of ups and downs. Remember to keep your head up and smile up because learning is part of the process everyday!
