Why I Don't Always Wear Glasses

A lot of people have their own reasons. For me, I grew up going to school wearing glasses for majority of my childhood and found that the piece of metal and glass kept slipping off my face making me look silly. Although glasses are meant to help us see better, I noticed I reached an age where my vision has a difficult time showing signs of change and deciding to not exercise the muscles in my eyes and relying on a high prescription glasses just isn't worth my time. I will elaborate my main points below.

1. I was not born with glasses on.
  • Embracing the person I was born as and my appearance without glasses has been instrumental for me gaining a greater sense of self confidence. When I look into the mirror, I see my eyes for how they truly look, yes even the dark circles and tiredness from long nights of studying. When I didn't wear my glasses, I learned to love my eyes more when I stare in a mirror which has brought me a sense of happiness.

2. I am not embracing the vision I was born with.
  • Although I was not born with perfect vision, I realized my eyes started having a difficult time adjusting to focus on distant objects as I spent more than four months wearing high prescription glasses. I was disappointed with myself for allowing the muscles in my eyes to relax/weaken for such a long period of time; I knew I wanted to make a change. Similar to exercising at the gym, I knew it was time to give my eyes their own workout. I noticed my vision has become much stronger lately as I've taken a break from my consistent glasses use.

3. It did not appreciate the look when I was a child.
  • A good majority of my childhood was spent wearing glasses. I was seen as your typical quiet nerd who would probably enjoy playing video games. As much as I do love playing video games, I didn't want to be seen as a nerd. When I started playing sports, I finally stopped wearing my glasses and noticed how much better I looked. I grew up with a lazy eye, and if you're someone like me, you would probably have spent a good amount of your time wearing an eye patch to hopefully improve your vision. Sadly, childhood me never wanted to spend a school year doing this. As much as I wanted to become a pirate and search for treasure as a kid, I didn't want to look that way forever and I slowly noticed that my appearance started to lower my confidence because I didn't look very natural. I didn't think I was embracing how I naturally looked or my eyes for how they actually functioned. I see everything as a gift and my eyes and current vision are all important parts of this gift.

4. Feels weird after wearing for an extended period of time
  • If you wear glasses for a good majority of your day, you will notice marks on the edges of your nose and that the world looks so different when you take them off. Similar to the character from Scooby Doo Velma, I didn't want to have horrible vision when my glasses fell off so I chose to consistently train my eyes. On the upside, when I wore glasses during my childhood my vision did improve but now that I am an adult, the effect is less likely to be seen.

In conclusion, I personally don't enjoy wearing glasses but I would not mind wearing them every now and then especially for reading paperback books. These are just my opinions if anyone can possibly relate to them. Glasses are still an amazing invention and I'm sure a lot of people would agree it still makes the lives of many especially the elderly much easier.
