Why You Should Not Give Up Video Games
As someone who stopped playing video games since he started college in order to build a strong sense of focus, I got to say that it felt like I would not be coming back. Today, I only play one gaming app on my productivity iPad and have just purchased a Nintendo Switch with only the purpose of reliving childhood games and rebuilding a sense of nostalgia. I would definitely say that the biggest value that comes from video games is enjoyment, adventure, and social activity. When I was a child, I remember pretending that I was the character in the video games an example would be Sonic; I wanted to run as fast as Sonic or drive fast cars like Mario or Crash Bandicoot. All of these fictitious thoughts and dreams helped shape the person I am currently and still strive to become in one shape or form.
As Bruce Lee once said, “Adapt what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” In terms of video games, the adaptation would be extraordinary skills such as speed, strength, driving ability, and overall happiness and enjoyment. As a child, I easily came up with creative ideas or could turn my bedroom into a war zone just by picking up a toy. The ability to create environments or master a sense of achievement each day is an important lesson video games have taught me. As a graduate student studying pharmacy, I found myself more engaged in problem solving when it is gamified because thats how I mainly found enjoyment out of life when I was a kid through achievements in video games. Even when my efforts felt futile, a video game would reward me for even the smallest of wins. I see this blog as a video game. Creating ideas and finding ways for it to help others see things in a different light.
The goal is to make things that aren't enjoyable more enjoyable. For example, most people are afraid of driving because they associate driving with all of these negative fears of judgment by other people. A racing video game such as Mario Kart or Crash Team Racing has only helped me reignite the joy I feel when I play video games. I see it as a destination into a new world or even someone's own imagination. Humans are admirable in that we can place so much time into our interests and desires in order to create works of art.
Important: Balance Is Key
Even if you do decide to return to playing video games, it is important to be careful of the amount of time you spend playing video games. The sweet spot is 30 minutes. Personally, if you play for 1 hour or worse 2 hours, you are going on a video game marathon which can possibly be an addiction. It is gaming like that which is why many people have such a negative view of video games. My goal is to only adapt the positive feelings, creativity, happiness, and entertainment that come with video games which can be obtained through gaming for a short period of time then returning to my work.
In conclusion, video games are a great activity to do during your break time from intense workflow or focus to resharpen your mind. By purchasing a Nintendo Switch, I have added another option I can use to destress and recharge after long periods of studying. My goal with video games is to use it to gamify my study habits similar to the beauty that Habitica has created for many (I would highly recommend that productivity app). Adding to an arsenal of weapons to recharge myself when I feel drained in my day, here is what my weaponry looks like currently: exercise books, iPad (Youtube, Games, Music), Phone (Social media), Video Games (Nintendo Switch). With all the options in the world, it is once again important to remember our currency which is our time. Spending it on either of these weapons is essential and the best case scenario is to balance my use of everything based on my mood and the current events of the day. However, the list shows the hierarchy from my top choices for breaks to my least important choice. I hope you don't throw out those old consoles yet and try to reframe your current work ethic. Remember planning is key and reshaping your environment for success is even better,
