What It Feels Like To Love Your Work

The best part about going to work is actually learning that you love showing up and for me it's been coming in with the mindset that I'm going to leave today learning something new or challenging myself in new ways to learn or master a new skill that correlates with the daily workflow. For me, I've been treating work similar to the gym: the moment I get in it's going to be difficult but my mind is open and I'm ready to learn.

Of course, no gym time would be complete without those monotonous easy reps in between. I think thats the part people get stuck on when it comes to their jobs. They focus on only the monotonous portions of it and never really open up their horizons to the more enjoyable parts such as the people or activities that they're taking part in on a larger level. We tend to focus on the small scale but never really think about our work on the larger scale on how our work impacts others or at least some person somewhere in the world. Even if you just sold someone an item, you've technically added some sort of value to another person's life which is pretty invaluable. People are constantly looking for novelty so if you can add anything to someones life let it be that! A mindset like this can easily change boring work to positive work.

Another reason people feel like they don't like their job is due to feeling overworked. In the gym, if you keep doing a specific type of workout constantly you get tired and thats when you need to take a break and recharge by drinking water or grabbing a snack NOT by scrolling through your phone or social media. Those activities will make your job feel even more monotonous and boring because you will easily compare the media and what is trending in the world to where you are at currently. This will ultimately take you away from where your mind should be the most which is the present with the people who are with you right now and the work that actually has the potential to be done and the accomplished you waiting to be realized by the end of the work day.

I took on an experiment. I worked for free no pay just experience and focus. My result, I learned so much, met great people this summer, got to meet more of the community, learned new skill sets, and built friendships! These were unforgettable memories and even with the coronavirus keeping everyone indoors or wearing masks it was honestly never a problem for me to work for free because of all of these benefits. The other workers were encouraging of me and helped me pick up any slack in a manner that was completely at my pace. I even slowly came up with cooking ideas, shopping ideas, and received life advice. Working with people more experienced than you in a field will more likely than not lead you to learning new material! Don't give up too early and at the end of the day reflect on what you learned instead of focusing on the monotonous side of the job because I have to admit there were multiple monotonous moments on the job where I honestly felt like the time I was investing was being wasted but I immediately changed focus when a new challenge arose requiring me to get out of my comfort zone. For me, it was handling service phone calls from customers which I slowly got better at the more I received help from experienced workers. It's similar to the gym in a sense that when you first come in you're not the best and you still have so much to learn plus there's a lot of people around who can help you.

In conclusion, always focus on what you have learned at the end of the day from work instead of the complaints or the boring sides of it because not every second of life is going to be interesting. Life is like that but social media tells us life is always supposed to be interesting. If you decide to live in the real world and actually get out of your head of dream lives or overworked burn out grinds of startups you will realize the best job is truly right in front of you right now! Even if you don't get paid, you come in knowing that you will learn and you will be present. This is the dream job, this is how you love your work, this is a happy life!

I hope you find something helpful here.
