Thoughts on "The Power of Now"

Lately, I've been listening to the audiobook for "The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle and it has absolutely been addressing majority of mine and probably also mainstream society's fears and worries. The reason why we become anxious or uncomfortable is because our mind is outside of the now. Our minds aren't focused on accepting who we are and where we are right now and that is what is truly holding us back from becoming great.

One night, I couldn't sleep and decided to throw on this audiobook and soon realized the reason I couldn't sleep was because I was anxious about the future, specifically anxious about online classes and online exams this school year. I didn't quite get comfortable with the fact that these things are outside of my control and sphere of influence. If we try to control and change the future without identifying and recognizing our state in the present we cannot produce valuable change. It is in the recognition of ourself and our current state that we will truly learn to be happy and satisfied.

The book is making realize my own shortcomings particularly in the realm of always constantly trying to excel in life. I usually work with people with a similar mindset of striving endlessly for success and fame. However, the reality is that all of this is not worth it in the long run. What is the point of building so much riches if our health and mental state feel aged and damaged. Besides time, our health is another important part of this existence that we will never get back. As it is spent each day, we either grow or waste the gift of good health.

The book praises and persistently defines the endless theme of the "Now." We are happy now or we are sad now. It questions this reason for sadness, however, because in the now we don't have problems in this life. It is only when we associate or dwell on past experiences that the now becomes distant and we feel unsatisfied.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who has a difficult experience with anxiety or feels less present in this life. In reality, wouldn't this be the thing we should all strive for? Happiness in the now. Happiness in ourselves. Happiness for others.
