Experimental Study Method: Writing Everything Out
Recently, I started testing out a new study method now that we're all stuck at home for online classes I've started looking into the study art of writing out material and slides during study periods. Normally, I would just stick to using flashcards but since its a new semester and probably the last semester of taking regular classes for me before graduation I thought I'd give this method a try and see if I benefit from it, gain new insights, and improve my exam grades.
Here is how I'm implementing this method:
Plan: Obviously, during the writing sessions I'll eventually grow disengaged with the material so I plan on throwing on something interesting in the background such as music, podcast, or audiobook to keep myself engaged.
Quantify: During study sessions, I will be using Pomodoro timers to keep account of how much hours I'm logging into this practice and reward myself accordingly. Knowing how much hours to dedicate to this practice is essential so I plan on logging 3-4 hrs daily. The goal of this is to measure progress and retention at the end of the day or come exam time.
Do Not Disturb: Emails, notifications, text message, people will not be able to reach me during this time. I will essentially be just stuck with the material. This will also involve removing unhealthy triggers such as being away from my bed, phone, TV, or video games.
Accountability: I use the habit tracker Habitica to at least ensure that I log at least 1 study session of writing daily.
Health: The availability of food and hydration are essential towards success so it's important to keep some by you at all times.
Test: I will only create flashcards for blind facts that I must memorize utilizing the programs: Quizlet or Anki.
Preparation: At the end of the day, you'll want to delegate all minor tasks to be sort of robotic by the end of the day these include teeth brushing, showering, eating, skin care, etc. If possible, take care of these areas before your study/writing session. Prepare your bed to be easily catching for when you may feel disoriented after a long day and are ready to knock out. At this time, you will have the permission to check social media because your study sessions are now complete at this point.
Downshift: Besides checking social media, your mental and inner health is important so make time for 30 minutes to check in with your inner self through meditation a relaxing audiobook (possibly fiction) in order to calm your mind of its anxieties today. Lay in bed and be present or as you normally would, just sleep.
Bonus points: go to a gym before your study session to easily prime your mind for the study session.
